Dr. Kelvin Mah, Dentist
I’m a rare born and raised Vancouverite. As a graduate of UBC Dental School, I’ve been practicing since 1992. Initially drawn to dentistry because of its technical nature, I soon discovered as my practice evolved, that it was my passion for helping people that truly drives me.
I see my strength in really listening and understanding what my patients want. From there we facilitate achieving their goals. I have a strong interest in aesthetic dentistry and have taken countless hours of continuing education to further my knowledge in the area.
As a result, my team and I have been constantly humbled by the changes a confident smile can bring someone. When I’m not working, I enjoy time with my wife and young son, as I view life through his unbiased eyes!
I’ve always wanted to help people in a health oriented environment.
Since graduating in 1990 from VCC in Dental Office Administration, I’ve kept my education current by attending several Business Consultant training workshops and seminars over the years. I also have over 25 years as a office manager/treatment coordinator throughout the Lower Mainland.
I chose to work at SCSD because of Dr. Kelvin Mah. He is truly amazing, inspiring, and motivational, not to mention authentic to the core. My favourite part of the job is the people- I get to work with Kelvin, our awesome staff, and our great patients.
What I love most about the practice is when we show our patients the SCSD difference, which I know makes us unique because of the level of care that we offer.
During my free time, I teach Hawaiian (hula) dancing at my sister’s school in Maple Ridge, and I also perform and attend workshops in Kaui’i, O’ahu, Vancouver WA, and California.
I love to dance and drink red wine. Those are always good times and I can be pretty funny when I want to.
Last but not least, I am the main leader of the School of Polynesian Dance.
Jessica Morris, Registered Dental Hygienist
I am passionate about health and wellness, and I’m particularly interested in the connection between oral and systemic health.
That interest lead me to get my diploma in Dental Hygiene from Fanshawe College in 2005, and I received my Bachelor of Dental Science in Dental Hygiene in April 2016 at UBC, where I graduated with the highest academic standing of my class.
I have been working at Smile City Square Dental since 2009, and prior to that I worked in Banff, Alberta, for 3 years. I came to SCSD because of their values and the emphasis they place on patient care, and I love being part of a highly skilled team where I can help make a difference in my patients’ lives.
The best part of my job is getting to know my patients. Over the 7 years I’ve been at SCSD, I have been lucky to build some amazing relationships- both professional and personal.
Our practice is made up of a small team of like-minded people who share the same passion, and that’s what keeps me coming back day after day. Our office culture is amazing- we feel more like a family.
I love running, hiking, reading, and spending time with friends, and I’m also completely obsessed with my Fitbit, perhaps not surprisingly.
I also served on the UBC Hygiene Admissions Committee, and was recently invited to join the UBC clinical faculty. As well, I’m a member of the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association and the College of Dental Hygienists of BC.
Reena Chadha, Registered Dental Hygienist
Hi! I’ve been working at Smile City Square Dental for a little over a year now, and it’s been great. I have my Level II CDA from MTI, and received my Dental Hygiene degree from UBC in 2009.
I’ve been a Registered Dental Hygienist for the past 8 years, and I choose this career because I wanted to help people and make them smile. I love Smile City’s mission statement, which is “Enriching lives, one smile at a time” because it is something that I truly believe in, and from the minute I arrived I could tell the rest of the team does, too. From the positive energy to the beautiful architectural designs of our office, you can see that the mission statement informs everything we do here.
I particularly like Dr. Mah’s choice in music, and sometimes when nobody’s watching, I even dance a little!
When I’m not in the office, I like reading up on metaphysics and astrology, and I enjoy travelling, hiking, and yoga. When I’m not marathoning Netflix, I enjoy dining out and baking.
You may not know that I sang the national anthem at a Canucks game, and I’ve been to Las Vegas almost 20 times.
I’m also a proud member of the BC Dental Hygienist Association and Canadian Dental Hygienist Association.
Jayne Burgoyne, Registered Dental Hygienist
I have always been passionate about helping people, especially in the health and wellness areas. Before I knew I wanted to become a Registered Dental Hygienist, I studied Nutritional Science at UBC but I feel dental hygiene is the perfect fit for me, especially because it’s so hands-on.
I used to work in sales at Bikram Yoga, as the Catering Coordinator for Hotels where I focused on Wedding and Event planning.
I have been working at Smile City Square Dental for 5 years, and came here after hearing another respected dentist’s rave reviews about Dr. Mah and the staff.
My favourite part of the job is when our patients feel that they’re taken care of and leave with a smile. I love the ‘A-ha!’ moments where patients learn something new about their oral health and feel inspired to create positive habits.
Our personalized care means that everyone tries to get to know each and every patient on an individual basis, and we do our best to find out what their goals and needs are in regards to their dental health. I think our patients sense that we come from a place of sincere respect and care for them because we are very patient-centered.
I really enjoy being active and outdoors- hiking is a favourite of mine, and I also enjoy working out at the gym. I also love food and since Vancouver has so many fabulous restaurants, it’s almost paradise here.
I’m always up for an adventure, such as kite surfing in Spain or skydiving in BC.
Laura Milare, CDA
I’ve always been interested in healthcare, and because I enjoy working with people, I decided to pursue a career as a Certified Dental Assistant, and I received my certificate from Vancouver Community College.
I’ve been dental assisting for the past ten years, and I’ve been working at Smile City Square Dental for the last two. I came to SCSD because of Dr. Mah and his philosophy of enriching lives, one smile at a time, and the people I’ve encountered while working here are one of the best parts of the job- our patients are awesome and I love everyone on our team. I think the team here is what really makes SCSD stand out because we all have a positive attitude and are on the same page.
When I’m not at the office, you might find me biking on my beach cruiser, at spin class, cooking, or travelling the world.
One last thing, my nickname is Milly.
Kim Pham, CDA & Admin
I’ve been a Certified Dental Assistant at Smile City Square Dental for the last two years, having completed my education at Simon Fraser University and Vancouver Community College.
As a kid I always loved going to the dentist, and I was actually encouraged to pursue this career by my family dentist, who recognized and fostered my interest in the field perhaps realizing how rare it was for a kid to love those semi-annual dental appointments.
Before coming to Smile City Square, I worked at Impact Dental, along with a couple of other offices in Surrey. What brought me to Smile City Square was the opportunity to work as a Certified Dental Assistant and Admin, and the best part of the job is being able to help my team in whatever way I can.
When I’m not working, I love reading and drawing, along with exploring the great outdoors, whether it’s biking or walking the local trails. One thing you may not know about me is that I’m a part-time tutor at a local Kumon Learning Centre because I enjoy teaching and believe in the importance of education.
